SAN FRANCISCO, December 12, (THEWILL) – Popular American rapper, Dwayne Michael Carter, better known as Lil Wayne on Friday, pleaded guilty to a federal charge that he possessed a weapon after being convicted for felony and he faces up to 10 years in prison.

The rapper admitted possessing the 45 calibre gun and six rounds of ammunition following a search on his private plane after he arrived in Miami from California on 23 December 2019.

Lil Wayne had told investigators the gun was a Father’s Day gift and he entered a plea in the hearing conducted remotely before U.S. District Judge, Kathleen Williams.

“Your honor, I plead guilty to the charge,” Carter told the judge.

THEWILL writes that the federal charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years but according to reports, Lil Wayne will likely get far less time than that as he is free on $250,000 bail but had to surrender his passport.

The charge is coming from a weapons conviction for Carter in New York more than a decade ago, for which the rapper was sentenced to eight months in prison as convicted felons are not allowed under federal law to possess arms.

Carter’s lawyer, Howard Srebnick, stated that he is considering a motion to suppress the search of the plane which is a violation of the rapper’s constitutional rights.

“I must say I thought it was a very viable motion. He has decided not to pursue a motion to suppress,” Srebnick said.

Also, the Miami U.S. attorney’s office also disclosed that investigators discovered small amounts of cocaine, ecstasy, and oxycodone in a bag belonging to the rapper but he was not charged with any drug crime.

THEWILL writes that Wayne is expected to be sentenced on January 28.
