October 29, (THEWILL) – Barcelona defeated Valencia 1-0 at Mestalla on Saturday, thanks to a late goal from Robert Lewandowski that came as a great relief for the visitors.
In a game that had hitherto been low on incidents, both teams had goals disallowed and also suffered player injuries, with Marcos de Sousa coming in for Valencia’s Edinson Cavani and Marcos Alonso replacing Eric Garcia.
It seemed destined to end goalless before Lewandowski surprised everyone by scoring the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute to put Barcelona back on top of La Liga until Real Madrid meet Girona on Sunday.
Gennaro Gattuso, the manager of Valencia, will be miffed that despite his team’s stellar defensive performance, they were left empty-handed at the final whistle, but credit to the Polish forward, who resiliently chased every opportunity until he found the back of the net.
Although out of the UEFA Champions League, Barca will have to complete their group stage matches with a Tuesday clash against Group C opponents Viktoria Plzen while Valencia are next against Real Sociedad on Sunday.
