April 09, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich needed a late penalty from Robert Lewandowski, to beat Augsburg in the Bavarian derby on Saturday.

The hosts started strongly, but Augsburg showed no fear of their more illustrious opponents, pressing high and attempting to sneak behind the Bayern backline.

Andre Hahn took advantage of Tanguy Nianzou’s clumsy back-pass, but he could not get a shot off.

Bayern had chances of their own early on. Before Joshua Kimmich dragged wide from a good position, Lewandowski was inches away from connecting with a header.

Despite dominating possession, the league leaders failed to test Rafal Gikiewicz in the Augsburg goal in the first half. In fact, neither side had a shot on target and Julian Nagelsmann would have been frustrated with his team at the break.

Bayern had their first shot on target in less than a minute of the restart. Lewandowski’s wonderful header appeared to be heading for the net, but Gikiewicz made a stunning stop to keep the game level.

On the hour mark, Gikiewicz got down well again to deny Joshua Kimmich as the German hit a range shot. In the 75th minute, substitute Kingsley Coman got an inch of space, but his shot sailed wide of the post, encapsulating Bayern’s effort.

Then, with 10 minutes remaining, Bayern was given a lifeline when Lewandowski’s header collided with Reece Oxford’s arm, resulting in a penalty, which the Pole converted with ease to secure a gritty victory.

Bayern threatened to make it two before the final whistle. Coman’s shot was brilliantly stopped by Gikiewicz, before Kimmich rocked the crossbar with a superb effort from distance, and the great Niklas Dorsch had to clear off the line in the dying seconds.
