Late Bale Equaliser Helps LAFC To MLS Cup Win Via Penalty Shootouts Against Philadelphia

November 06, (THEWILL) – Los Angeles FC won the MLS Cup for the first time on Saturday after defeating the Philadelphia Union in penalty kicks in what might go down as the greatest MLS game ever and unquestionably the most thrilling MLS Cup in history.

At Banc of California Stadium, Philly appeared poised to defeat the hosts and favourites LAFC in overtime thanks to two goals from centre-back, Jack Elliott. However, Gareth Bale’s equaliser, which was scored after the Welshman came off the bench to score and show that things were far from over.

In the thrilling encounter that finished with a 2-2 scoreline in regulation time and a 3-3 last-minute tie after extra time, the game went to penalties, which the home team won 3-0 despite being down to 10 men during the extra session after first-team goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau was red-carded for blocking a goal-scoring chance.

John McCarthy, the LAFC backup goalkeeper, made two saves as the Union failed to score on any of their three penalty kicks and the keeper, who was a Union player from 2015 to 2018, was awarded the MLS Cup MVP in LAFC’s first-ever MLS championship.

The six goals scored in the final are the most since the San Jose Earthquakes and Chicago Fire’s championship game in 2003. That was also the last time that the top two seeds advanced to the final.
