September 07, (THEWILL) – Nick Kyrgios suffered unexpected loss to Karen Khachanov in the US Open quarter-finals that left the Australian irate and frustrated more with his own performance than anything else.
The 27-year-old was furious because he was unable to perform at his peak during the chaotic match at Flushing Meadows, after suffering a surprise 7-5 4-6 7-5 6-7(3) 6-4 loss in the night session inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.
After a very strong few months on the ATP Tour and after reaching the Wimbledon final, Kyrgios was a top favourite to win the tournament in New York especially after dispatching world number one, Daniil Medvedev. However, Kyrgios was unable to match Khachanov’s intensity when it mattered most in the decisive final set.
At several points during the game, the Australian let out his normal explosive irritation and anger. He once threw a bottle at the ground during a changeover that the cap flew off and liquid leaked onto the court in front of him. Before the game could continue, ball kids were forced to intervene and clean up the mess.
After Khachanov’s remarkable victory, Kyrgios smashed two racquets on the court in a fit of rage at the outcome and his own performance. The 26-year-old Khachanov’s next opponent is fifth seed, Casper Ruud, who defeated 13th seed, Matteo Berrettini, 6-1 6-4 7-6(4)
