January 14, (THEWILL) – Jurgen Klopp has admitted that the physical and mental toll of last season’s quadruple hunt may be affecting Liverpool’s performance this season.

The Reds, who won both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup last season, fell short in their quest for English Premier League and UEFA Champions League glory. This season, Liverpool is currently 16 points behind league leaders, Arsenal and has been hit by a number of injuries to key players.

In an interview, Klopp said: “It must have [played a part in their struggles]. We can say that now. There was no book written about it, there was no data about it. There was nothing about it because nobody played that many games ever before.

“Outside the club, they are speaking as if we are bottom of the table. There are times when you just have to get through it.”

Virgil van Dijk, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, and Roberto Firmino have all been sidelined with injuries, while other regular starters have failed to match their outputs from last season. With their elimination from the Carabao Cup and a difficult match against Real Madrid in the Champions League round of 16, Liverpool faces an uphill battle to end the current campaign with any silverware.
