February 01, (THEWILL) – Matteo Darmian was the hero for Inter Milan as they advanced to the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia with a 1-0 victory over Atalanta on Tuesday.
The first half was a tight affair with both teams failing to take advantage of their chances. Inter’s Hakan Calhanoglu came close when his shot hit the post, while Atalanta’s Duvan Zapata missed a header from a great delivery by Joakim Maehle just before the break.
After the restart, Maehle nearly scored himself, but his effort went over the bar. Despite the missed opportunities on both sides, it was Inter who eventually broke the deadlock thanks to Darmian’s goal. Lautaro Martinez set up the defender with a deft pass, and Darmian finished the chance with a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner.
Atalanta pushed for an equaliser, with Jeremie Boga and substitute Ademola Lookman both having shots saved by Andre Onana as Inter held firm to secure the win. The result sets up a semi-final clash for Inter as they continue their quest for another Coppa Italia trophy.
With Milan and Napoli already eliminated from the competition, Inter will be looking to lift the trophy for a ninth time.
