Insecurity And Negative Implications Of Hyping Challenges On Social Media

February 05,(THEWILL) – The negative implication of projecting the rising security challenges in Nigeria on social and conventional media, could not only be destructive but can be wittingly or unwittingly encouraging the perpetrators to do more.

Although, Journalists report criminal incidents on the conventional media in order to inform the general public of the incident and to be security-conscious of their place of abode. But mind you, the gunmen, whether “known or unknown”, should not be given that prominence on pages of the newspapers as the non-media practitioners do on Facebook and other non-conventional media.

These days, social media spaces are being awashed with the horrible news of killings, armed robbery attacks, Kidnapping, Assassination and other appallingly despicable acts that ought not to be imagined nor witnessed in our time.

It is a truism that the emergence of social media – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube – are for the aid of dissemination of information across the world, but their unnecessary usage has created tension across the world through the posting of unverified information.

Insecurity has remained one of the challenges facing leaders of the world lately. Unfortunately, wars being fought against these issues are defeated because the perpetrators are unrepentant. They are always ready to achieve their goal of launching attacks on the government infrastructures, killings and destruction of lives and hard-earned properties.

To be frank, the invention of social media has brought about quick information dissemination across the world. It has contributed to the sourcing of information and acquisition of knowledge.

Millions of people around the world use social media to share information and make connections. On a personal level, social media allows us to communicate with friends and family, learn new things, develop our interests, and be entertained. On a professional level, we have used social media to broaden our knowledge and build our professional network by connecting with people.

The promotion of insecurity has deeply aided the disruption of economic activities across the country. Daily sad news has continued to portray the country in a negative light.

Perhaps, the persistent security issues in Nigeria might have been surmounted if the operations of these hoodlums were neither given attention to nor posted on social media.

The projection of killings and other criminal activities on the spaces should be only targeted at opening the eyes of the general public and not necessarily to praise the suspects, who perpetrate the horrible acts of destruction on the peoples’ hard-earned property and maiming of lives.

The rising level of immodest behaviours today, which should have been nipped in the bud by parents, guardians, teachers, religious leaders, traditional rulers and other stakeholders, are getting out of proportion.

Recently, I spotted about six boys, whose age could be in their early thirties, brandishing pistles through an open-roof vehicle along Owerri-Okigwe road. To my greatest amazement, the onlookers were hailing, clapping and chanting songs for them over the “exposure” in a broad daylight.

When I enquired to know what could have prompted their debasing actions, I was told that one of the boys was the bereaved son of the deceased woman whose copse was being ferried in an ambulance during a motorcade from the mortuary on that faithful day. I shook my head in bewilderment.

Hyping insecurity in whatsoever guise doesn’t aid in abating it. It rather worsens it. It creates tension and fear in the lives of the public.

Blames have always been apportioned on the National Censors Board for having failed in one of its official responsibilities of censoring movies, and phasing out ones that are devoid of good morals. This is because society is affected negatively or positively through the theme of a movie.
