INEC Debunks Over-voting Comment In Osun Poll

February 02, (THEWILL) – The Osun State office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has debunked reports that its Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Mutiu Agboke, said there was over-voting during the July 16, 2022, governorship election in the state.

Some media (not THEWILL) reported that Agboke, who spoke at the palace of Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, during a visit to the royal father on Tuesday, admitted the overvoting cited in the judgment of the Election Petition Tribunal, which annulled the outcome of the July 16 poll in the state.

“It was BVAS that helped INEC to expose those who carried out over-voting on election day. So it was not the BVAS that created the problem, that should be corrected. Based on that ruling, we have identified some inadequacies from the politicians, voters, our staff and our responsibility is to ensure that we cover all these gaps so that the votes of the Osun people can speak for them,” reports quoted Agboke.

But a statement issued on Thursday, by the Head of Department, Voter Education, Publicity and Inclusivity in the office, Adewale Francis, disowned the purported comment credited to Agboke, describing it as incorrect and mischievous.

“The attention of the Osun State office of INEC has been drawn to media reports that the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Mutiu Agboke, purportedly said that there was over-voting during the election.

“The report is incorrect and mischievous.

“The REC only explained the efficacy of the Biomodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) as a device for the accreditation of voters when he visited the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi.

“Any extrapolation to the contrary is outside the context of the statement and should be disregarded.

“We implore the media to always verify their source of information before publication,” the statement read.
