I Want To Continue Playing As Champion – Messi

December 18, (THEWILL) – The Qatar World Cup may have ended with Argentina winning their third ever final, but their talismanic captain, Lionel Messi, has said he has no immediate plans to stop playing for his country as many had envisaged will happen.

The 35-year-old was the centre of attention before the competition since it appeared to be his final opportunity to capture the one trophy that had eluded him during his outstanding playing career.

There were those who believed that Messi’s time in the blue and white striped Argentina jersey would come to an end after the 2022 World Cup, regardless of the result. But after leading Argentina to a victory over France on penalties with a Player of the Match performance, Messi did not hang his boots.

Instead he said: “No, I’m not going to retire from the Argentina national team. I want to continue playing as a champion.”

La Albiceleste will now focus on retaining the Copa America in 2024, which they will now hope Messi can be there for after being crucial to their win in the event last year, even if it remains highly improbable that Messi would represent La Albiceleste at another World Cup.

At club level, Messi has an option to stay at Paris Saint-Germain for another year once his current contract expires at the end of the current campaign.
