October 4, (THEWILL) – Gonzalo Higuain declared on Monday that he would give up playing football professionally at the conclusion of the 2022 MLS season.

The veteran striker, a former Argentina international with 75 caps, will end an illustrious 17-year career, which was eventful enough to include being a part of the team that finished second at the 2014 World Cup.

Higuain began his playing career with River Plate and went on to play over 100 games for Real Madrid, Napoli, and Juventus. Prior to joining Inter Miami, he also had brief stints with Milan and Chelsea.

The Argentine, who is a six-time domestic league winner and has won the La Liga and Serie A titles three times apiece, joined the MLS team in September 2020. With 12 goals and two assists in the last 14 games for Miami, Higuain has been on fire in the second half of this season.

There are two games left in the regular season and Phil Neville’s team, currently ranked seventh in the Eastern Conference, is fighting for the final playoff spot. Miami’s season and Higuain’s career could be prolonged by victories over Orlando City on Wednesday and CF Montreal on Sunday.
