January 20, (THEWILL) – The Golden Eaglets of Nigeria are set to begin their preparations for the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Monday, January 23, 2023.
The team’s manager, Nduka Ugbade, has invited 48 players to report to Abuja on Friday, January 20, 2023. The majority of the players invited to the squad are the same ones, who helped Nigeria win the WAFU B Under-17 Championship in Cape Coast, Ghana, last summer.
The 2023 AFCON tournament will be hosted by Algeria, and is scheduled to begin April 8 through April 30, 2023. The top four teams from the tournament will qualify to represent Africa in the FIFA U-17 World Cup finals, which will be held in Peru, from November 10 through December 2, 2023.
Nigeria has a strong history in the FIFA U-17 World Cup, having won the tournament a record five times in 1985, 1993, 2007, 2013, and 2015. The Golden Eaglets will be looking to add another trophy to their collection, as they begin their preparations for the 2023 AFCON tournament.
