November 14, (THEWILL) – A former title contender in the UFC and Bellator, Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, passed away on Sunday, at the age of 38. Bellator released a statement after learning of his death, in which it said it was “devastated by his untimely passing and we send our condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Johnson made a post on Instagram in 2021 about the illness he was suffering that read: “Really wish I could go into detail about how ill I truly am. Just know I need as many prayers as I can get and I’ll see you in 2022 God willing… Never been afraid of anything in my life but I’ve remained strong with the support of friends and family.”

In May 2021, Johnson engaged in his final battle, which served as a poignant capstone to his career. He brutally knocked out José Augusto Azevedo Barros in the second round to win the light heavyweight contest.

Johnson gained a reputation as a feared knockout artist while competing in the UFC multiple times between 2007 and 2017. He also managed to be successful in four different weight classes, taking victories at welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight. His 23 career victories included 17 knockouts.

“Rumble” became a fixture in the light heavyweight class, winning 12 of his following 14 contests. The only defeats during that period came in contests for the UFC light heavyweight championship against Daniel Cormier. With victories against champions Glover Teixeira, Ryan Bader, Antonio Nogueira, and Andrei Arlovski, in addition to victories over title challengers Phil Davis, Alexander Gustafsson, and Dan Hardy, Johnson left the UFC following Cormier’s second defeat.
