August 27, (THEWILL) – Imo State’s Governor Hope Uzodinma says there is no need for any law to prohibit open grazing in the place; stating that farmers and herders are living together in peace.

The Governor made this known during an interview on Channels Television.

Uzodinma disclosed that his government only regulated grazing activities in the state in a way that would favour both the herders and farmers.

He said herdsmen and farmers have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to be in peace with each other, stating that both parties have been going about their businesses without issues.

THEWILL recalls that the Southern Governors Forum had, in its Asaba declaration, decided, among others, to place a ban on open grazing and legal reinforcement of the ban in anti-open grazing law.

This was further re-echoed when the governors fixed September 1, 2021, as the deadline for all Southern states to pass the anti-open grazing law.

But responding to the development, Governor Uzodinma said, “I don’t have any law in Imo State for anti-grazing. What we have done is that we are regulating grazing activities in the state under a partnership between our farmers and our herders.

“They signed a Memorandum of Understanding in my office where they agreed to work together and both parties have been going about their businesses without causing any grievances or anger to each other.”
