January 12, (THEWILL) – Nottingham Forest defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers at the City Ground and advanced to the Carabao Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1992 thanks to Dean Henderson’s heroics in the penalty shootout.

Morgan Gibbs-White and Willy Boly, both former Wolves players, combined to give Forest the lead in regular time. Gibbs-White hung a beautiful first-half corner into the six-yard box, and Boly stabbed home from close range.

But, Raul Jimenez, a striker for Wolves, finished off Matheus Cunha’s low cross for an outstanding equaliser. As tempers flared, nasty confrontations broke out in the middle of the field, and officials intervened to separate the players before it was time for the shootouts.

After Jose Sa saved Sam Surridge’s penalty kick, Henderson turned away Ruben Neves’ attempt to balance the scores. Forest then successfully converted all four of their remaining penalties, Henderson kept out Joe Hodge’s attempt and the celebrations began for Forest.

In the two-match semifinal, with the first leg taking place at the City Ground, Steve Cooper’s team will face Manchester United, who defeated Forest in the 1992 final. The contests will be held the weeks of 23 and 30 January.
