October 07, (THEWILL) – After a 10-day training camp, Nigeria’s Under-17 girls’ team, the Flamingos, have taken off for India for this year’s FIFA U17 World Cup finals.
The team, which included 21 players and 12 officials, took a flight from Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport to Goa, where the Flamingos would play their group B matches against Germany and New Zealand. For their final match against Chile, they will take a flight to Bhubaneswar.
As part of their preparations, Flamingos defeated the Galatasaray Women’s team 3-1 while on their 10-day camping trip in Kocaeli, Turkey, thanks to two goals from Edidiong Etim and one from leading scorer Opeyemi Ajakaye.
However, as THEWILL reported, the Flamingos were defeated 1-3 by Fenerbahce Women in their second friendly ahead of the World Cup. On Wednesday, October 11, they will play their opening World Cup game against the favourites, Germany.
