January 30, (THEWILL) – Wolves have secured the signing of Flamengo’s Copa Libertadores winner, Joao Gomes, for what will be the team’s sixth acquisition of the transfer window.

The highly-regarded midfielder signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with the English Premier League club, rejecting an offer from Lyon in the process. He joins a roster of recent signings including Matheus Cunha, Pablo Sarabia, Mario Lemina, Craig Dawson, and Daniel Bentley.

Despite reported resistance from Flamengo, who had received a more lucrative offer from the Ligue 1 club earlier in the month, the 21-year-old kept his word to join Wolves.

Matt Hobbs, the Sporting Director at Wolves, praised the new addition, stating: “It’s been well publicised that we thought we had a deal sorted a couple of weeks ago, but what’s got the deal done has been the player. He’s turned down a more lucrative offer at another club because he always said he gave his word, he always wanted to come to Wolves.”

Gomes will miss the upcoming Club World Cup but is expected to make his EPL debut against Liverpool on Saturday.
