January 24, (THEWILL) – Chelsea are reportedly looking to make a significant investment in a young midfielder, with Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez and Brighton and Hove Albion’s Moises Caicedo, being strongly linked to the team.
The 22-year-old Fernandez made a name for himself by forcing his way into Argentina’s starting lineup during their 2022 World Cup victory, earning the Best Young Player award in the process.
Caicedo, who is 21, has also made a strong impression in his second Premier League season, starting in all 18 of his appearances this campaign and helping Brighton rise to sixth place on the table.
With Jorginho’s future at Chelsea uncertain and N’Golo Kante still out due to injury, the team is seeking a long-term solution in the midfield. Therefore, Chelsea will attempt to secure Fernandez before the end of January but are aware Benfica will not budge below the player’s £106m release clause.
An improved offer for Caicedo remains a possibility after their recent bid of £55m was rejected by Brighton. Yet, it begs the question if the Stamford Bridge side will continue to throw money at its problems and what will happen to the team when injured players return to the lineup.
