February 22, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid, Juventus, and Barcelona are discussing the possibility of holding a pre-season competition in the United States this summer.
Despite nine of the other 12 “founder members” withdrawing their support, the three sides remain committed to the formation of a European Super League. And, the management of the trio of sides see this arrangement as part of their single-minded purpose.
The insurgent clubs also remain adamant that reform is required at the highest level of the game. Therefore, Real, Juve, and Barca are devising a series of friendlies in the United States, which, among other interests, will help them make up for lost revenue due to the pandemic.
Milan, who were part of the Super League’s initial plans before withdrawing due to significant criticism, have been approached about becoming the tournament’s fourth team to complete the lineup.
While the tournament is still in the planning phases, it is expected that games will be held on the west coast of the United States, with many cities willing to host a Clasico between Real and Barcelona.
The two Spanish clubs last played in the United States in 2017, with Barça winning 3-2 in what would be Neymar’s penultimate game for the club before his world-record transfer to PSG.
Prior to the epidemic, all three teams had become accustomed to playing pre-season matches in the United States, with the International Champions Cup being contested there on a regular basis.
