December 15, (THEWILL) – In a touching admission, Sergio Aguero has revealed that he is retiring from football.

The 33-year-old was diagnosed with a cardiac arrhythmia, or abnormal heartbeat, as THEWILL reported in October. It was discovered when Aguero had to be hospitalised after suffering chest trouble in Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Alaves.

After that, he was declared ineligible for active football. In the next three months that followed, Aguero’s treatment was monitored to see if he had recovered from the problem.

Facing the reality of his situation, Aguero decided to call time on his football career. On Wednesday, he revealed this at the Nou Camp. Pep Guardiola, his former City manager, was in attendance, as were several other names from his Manchester days, as well as his Barcelona teammates and Argentina colleagues.

When he was first introduced, he was in tears, but after gathering himself, he said: “This is to tell you that I have decided to stop playing professional football.

“It is a very tough moment, but I am happy with the decision I have taken. First comes my health. I took the decision for the problems I had a month and a bit ago. I was in the good hands of the doctors who told me the best was to stop playing. I took the decision about a week ago, I did everything possible to keep hope alive, but there was not much. I am very proud of my career, very happy.

“I always dreamed of playing football, thankful to everyone who has helped me, at Atletico, at City, I am very grateful because I was treated very well. And the people at Barca have been incredible with me.

“I wanted to come to the best team in the world, but things happen for a reason, and they have treated me very well here. Also, I am grateful to the Argentina national team, and everybody here at this moment, my family.”

Aguero joined Barcelona on a free transfer from Manchester City last summer. He became City’s all-time leading scorer with 184 goals in 275 Premier League matches.

He needed to recover from a calf injury and so did not make his Catalan giants debut until October. He only made five appearances for Barcelona, scoring one goal in that time.

Aguero joined City from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and won five Premier League titles at the Etihad. In 2012, he won his first title with a dramatic injury-time victory against Queens Park Rangers. He also won six League Cups and one FA Cup while in England

On the international stage, the attacker helped Argentina win the Copa America this year and has played in three World Cups. He appeared in 101 games for his country, scoring 41 goals in the process.
