November 06, (THEWILL) – In the English Premier League on Sunday, Aston Villa defeated Manchester United 3-1 at Villa Park as Unai Emery made a triumphant comeback to English football.
Leon Bailey gave the home team the lead after just seven minutes. Soon after, Lucas Digne scored from a free kick to give Villa a two-goal advantage and put the visitors under pressure.
Just before the interval, Jacob Ramsey put Luke Shaw’s long shot into his own net to give United, for whom Cristiano Ronaldo served as captain, half of the deficit going into the break. Ramsey made up for his own goal soon after the break to restore Villa’s two-goal cushion.
Hard as United tried, there were no goals before the final whistle for yet another dismal day for the Red Devils as Erik ten Hag’s men could not muster a comeback, with Villa’s defence never seriously put to any sustained test at any point.
On Thursday, the two teams square off again at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup. After that, United travel to Fulham on Sunday, while Villa play away at Brighton and Hove Albion on the same day.
