January 09, (THEWILL) – Barcelona secured a 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid on Saturday, moving them three points clear at the top of La Liga.
Ousmane Dembele scored the only goal of the game in the first half, with a clinical right-foot finish, following a pass from Gavi. Atletico Madrid struggled to create clear chances and slipped to fifth place in the league as a result of the defeat.
In a poor patch of the result for the two managers, Stefan Savic and Ferran Torres, were both sent off in the closing stages of the match after a tussle off the ball, with Torres more to blame for the initial action that led to the ensuing tussle.
The victory was Barcelona’s first top-flight win since the league resumed after the World Cup break, and they were able to secure the win despite the absence of star player, Robert Lewandowski, who was suspended for the match.
Barcelona will now travel to Saudi Arabia for the Supercopa de Espana, where they will face Real Betis in the semi-finals on Thursday. Atletico Madrid will play Almeria next Sunday.
