BEVERLY HILLS, November 02, (THEWILL) – A Federal High Court in Abuja will decide on Tuesday (tomorrow) whether former National Security Adviser, Retired Colonel Sambo Dasuki (Rtd), who is standing trial on allegations of money laundering and illegal possession of firearms, can travel abroad for medicals.
The court also said it would rule Tuesday on the prosecution’s application for a secret trial of the matter.
Justice Adeniyi Ademola fixed the date after hearing the submissions of Dasuki’s Counsel, Mr. Joseph Daudu and Mr. Mohammed Diri, the prosecuting counsel.
Daudu told the court that the application was pursuant to Section 36 (b) of 1999 Constitution and Section 173 sub-sections (2) of the Criminal Justice Administration Act.
He said his client wants the court to release his international travel passport to enable him travel abroad to seek treatment over his deteriorating health.
He cited the case of former Delta State Governor, Mr. James Ibori against the State where he said that the Appeal Court ruled in favour of Ibori.
However, Diri, who opposed the application, said Dasuki could get treatment at
National Hospital, Abuja.
He said if the accused was allowed to travel abroad, he would interfere with the ongoing investigation, adding that Ibori’s case was different from Dasuki’s
Diri said Ibori was asked to produce sureties before he was granted bail, but that Dasuki was granted bail on self-recognition.
He, therefore, urged the court to refuse the application.
