January 29, (THEWILL) – Chelsea have announced the signing of right-back, Malo Gusto, from Ligue 1 side, Olympique Lyonnais.

The 19-year-old French defender was a target for the club as they sought to bring in replacement and competition for the injured Reece James. After a successful negotiation with Lyon, Chelsea agreed on a fee of around €30m and Gusto signed a contract running until 2030.

Gusto, who impressed in his 54 appearances for Lyon, will spend the rest of the current season on loan with the French club before joining Chelsea in the summer. He becomes the seventh signing of the winter transfer window for the Blues, following Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos and Noni Madueke.

The signing of Gusto marks a busy transfer window for Chelsea as they look to strengthen their squad and compete for titles in the coming seasons. The young defender has already earned praise for his performances in France and will bring added depth to Chelsea’s defence.

Fans will be eagerly anticipating his arrival at Stamford Bridge and his impact in the English Premier League even as the question remains how Graham Potter will deal with selection headaches when players return from injuries and the full squad is available.
