September 23, (THEWILL) – Sevilla’s Monchi is one of the names Chelsea would love to recruit to Stamford Bridge as they continue their search for a new Sporting Director.
The 54-year-old has been a player and executive for Sevilla for nearly 30 years — the only time away from the team was two years between 2017 and 2019 spent with Roma.
Monchi, who has long been regarded as one of football’s best sporting directors, has previously spoken with Manchester United and Arsenal and has been frequently linked with a move to the English Premier League.
After attempts to hire Michael Edwards and Christoph Freund fell through, Todd Boehly, the Blues co-owner and interim Sporting Director, who is a huge fan of Monchi has spoken with the Roma man and is said to have been extremely impressed by the Sevilla director’s personality.
Monchi’s desire to leave Sevilla, however, is not yet evident. When he joined Roma in 2017, he was persuaded to remain, but he only stayed there for two years before returning to Spain. It is unclear at this point whether he would be interested in leaving again.
