September 08, (THEWILL) – English Premier League side Chelsea has been fined £25,000 by the English Football Association for failing to control its players during the side’s matchday three fixture against Liverpool at Anfield, which finished 1-1.
This was disclosed in a statement released by the English FA. The statement said: “Chelsea FC has been fined £25,000 for two breaches of FA Rule E20.1 which occurred during their Premier League fixture against Liverpool FC on Saturday 28 August 2021.
“The club admitted failing to ensure that its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during both the 48th minute of the first half and following the half-time whistle.”
The crunch moment came when the decision by referee Anthony Taylor to issue a red card to Reece James incensed the Chelsea players, who crowded the referee in protest. They felt the red card was too harsh for having the ball deflect off the England star’s thigh onto his arm.
This was especially after Taylor had already awarded the hosts a penalty for the incident. It was a particularly decisive moment as Chelsea was leading and the hosts were finding it increasingly difficult to breach the compact Chelsea backline.
Players from both sides appeared to square off briefly as Liverpool players also joined in, before Taylor produced a yellow card for something Antonio Rudiger said that he disapproved of.
At the end of the encounter, Thomas Tuchel’s 10-man Chelsea returned home with a point having defended stoutly for the rest of the match.
