January 14, (THEWILL) – Senegal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Cote D’Ivoire, in the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Saturday.
The win, which put Senegal at the top of Group B, was thanks to a second half strike by substitute, Moussa Ndiaye. It was a tightly contested affair between the two African football giants, with Senegal putting Cote D’Ivoire under pressure from the opening whistle.
Despite the pressure, Cote D’Ivoire’s defense stood firm against Senegal’s attacks. Both teams had several chances to take the lead but failed to convert them.
The Elephants came back a much improved side in the second half, launching more attacks. However, they conceded a penalty in the 70th minute, which was saved by Ayayi Folly. The deadlock was eventually broken in the 73rd minute after a well-taken free kick by Lamine Camara, rebounded off the woodwork to land in the path of Ndiaye, who comfortably slotted home.
The result puts Senegal at the top of Group B with three points, ahead of DR Congo and Uganda, who both have one point. Cote D’Ivoire finds itself at the bottom of the group at this early stage.
