CHAN 2023: Cote d’Ivoire Beat Uganda 3-1 To Advance To Q’Finals

January 23, (THEWILL) – Côte d’Ivoire defeated Uganda 3-1 in the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Sunday, securing their spot in the quarter-finals of the tournament in Algeria.

The match, which took place at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers, opened up in the 12th minute when versatile forward Sankara Karamoko, scored the first goal of the game with a diving header from a well-taken Constant Wayou free kick.

Just 15 minutes later, the Ivorians doubled their lead with a goal from Vignon Ouotro, who was set up by a fine pass from Koffi Habib Cirille Ande. Despite this setback, the Ugandans did not give up and managed to score a goal in the 31st minute, thanks to a powerful shot from midfielder Moses Waiswa.

As Ugandans chased a leveller, they became vulnerable at the back and in the 78th minute, substitute Aubin Kouame Kramo scored the third goal for the Ivorians, sealing the game and securing their spot in the quarterfinals. The Ivorians will now face the host team, Algeria, on January 27 at the same venue.

This is the second time that the Ivorians have progressed from the group stages, having finished third in the 2016 edition in Rwanda. Meanwhile, the Ugandans have failed to make it past the group stages in each of the last six consecutive editions that they have qualified for.
