January 05, (THEWILL) – Taiwo Awoniyi was the hero for Nottingham Forest as they secured a 1-0 victory over Southampton on Wednesday, but he was forced to leave the game in the 71st minute due to fatigue.
Despite the absence of several first-team players, including Moussa Niakhate, Omar Richards, Giulian Biancone, Cheikhou Kouyate, and Jesse Lingard, Awoniyi’s strong performance towards finding the net proved successful, giving Forest the winning goal.
According to Forest manager, Steve Cooper, the substitution of the 25-year-old striker was simply related to fatigue, though the team was still assessing the situation.
The manager said: “It’s still early to tell if Awoniyi is injured. We’re still assessing. The players are in a bit later today. A couple of the lads walked off yesterday (against Southampton) with some fatigue.”
The Tricky Trees will face Blackpool in the FA Cup on Saturday, and Cooper will be hoping that Awoniyi is fit for the match to give his rejuvenated side the attacking threat that the former Liverpool forward is getting better at delivering.
