Benin Republic Police Arrest Controversial Former Militant, Asari-Dokubo

… Lawyer Blames His Detention On Forces Plotting Against Jonathan’s 2015 Possible Presidential Run

BEVERLY HILLS, CA, November 26, (THEWILL) – Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, a former militant commander and businessman has been detained in Cotounou, Benin Republic, by the nation’s gendarmes, his lawyer, Festus Keyamo said Tuesday.

Keyamo said he was detained between and 2pm local time and transported to an undisclosed location.

“He was picked up around the Lubeleyi roundabout and taken to an unknown destination,” the statement stated, adding that the repentant Niger Delta militant carries on legitimate business in the tiny West African country and has been living partly in Benin Republic for many years now.

“In fact, he owns houses, schools and an academy in that country. All these places have been searched as at this evening and nothing incriminating was found,” Keyamo said.

He said there are indications that Dokubo’s arrest and detention are a ploy by certain forces in Nigeria in unholy alliance with the government of Benin Republic to keep him away as 2015 approaches.

Dokubo had threatened to break up Nigeria if President Goodluck Jonathan, his kinsman, is not re-elected in 2015.

“We call on the Nigerian government to immediately intervene and ensure that no harm befalls Alhaji Dokubo-Asari and to use all diplomatic means to secure his immediate release and safe return to Nigeria,” the statement added.
