December 18, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich’s 2021 campaign came to a close with a 4-0 win over Wolfsburg at the Allianz Arena.

When Leroy Sane’s long strike was parried right into the path of Thomas Muller, who made no mistake from ten yards, they were 1-0 up before seven minutes.

Julian Nagelsmann’s team continued to attack, with Wolfsburg sitting extremely deep in midfield and giving them all the time they needed. Before the half-hour mark, Jamal Musiala dragged wide, while Robert Lewandowski failed to get enough strength on a delicate header to threaten Koen Casteels.

Wolfsburg were not completely out of it, and they did have the occasional counter, but Manuel Neuer was on hand to keep them at bay.

Whatever the hosts’ manager said at halftime worked, as Bayern came out for blood in the second period. In the 57th minute, Dayot Upamecano added a second, before Sane curled home a magnificent effort seconds later to take the wind out of Wolfsburg.

Wolfsburg’s focus very quickly turned to damage limitation as all hopes of getting anything out of the match vanished, but Bayern continued to press. Midway through the half, Lewandowski had a great chance, but Casteels saved it with his leg.

With four minutes remaining, just as it appeared that Lewandowski would leave the field without a goal, the Pole eventually thumped home from close range to score his 43rd Bundesliga goal of 2021, breaking another one of Gerd Muller’s long-standing records of calendar year goals in the process.

It is the last fixture before the Bundesliga takes a break until 2022. Bayern will return to action on January 7 against Borussia Monchengladbach at home, while Wolfsburg travel to Bochum two days later.
