April 02, (THEWILL) – With a spectacular 4-1 victory over Freiburg on Saturday at the Europa-Park Stadion, Bayern Munich drew closer to a 10th successive Bundesliga title.

Despite some inconsistency up front and a highly competitive, resolute, and stern opponent, goals from Leon Goretzka, Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman, and Marcel Sabitzer in the second half were enough to defeat the hosts, adding pressure on Borussia Dortmund to keep their own title challenge alive.

An energising start set the tone for a competitive and hard-fought match as neither team found their footing in front of goal until the half-hour mark.

Both teams could have scored early, though; Robert Lewandowski’s sloppiness in the Freiburg penalty area stunned fans and coaching crew, just as Lucas Holer squandered a well-worked chance for the visitors at the other end.

After half-time, the extremely competitive nature of the game continued, with Thomas Muller missing an opportunity to score within ten minutes of the restart after being placed through on goal by an incredible lofted pass from Coman.

The visitors would eventually have to rely on a set-piece situation to earn a deserved lead. Goretzka, making his much-anticipated comeback from injury, was on hand to nod home a magnificent delivery from Joshua Kimmich just before the hour mark, before wheeling away in joy.

The hosts were also congratulating themselves just after the hour mark. Nils Petersen sped into the penalty area seconds after entering the field of play, latching onto Christian Gunter’s lay-off and rifling the ball into Manuel Neuer’s bottom corner.

Gnabry, on the other hand, proved that history does indeed repeat itself in the 72nd minute.

Within seconds after coming off the bench, the Germany international took down Lucas Hernandez’s cross in the opposition penalty area, sidestepped past his man, and slotted the ball into the near corner with ease.

With just under ten minutes remaining, Coman snatched a merited goal thanks to some shoddy goalkeeping. The winger slammed the ball into Mark Flekken’s near corner from range after picking up Dayot Upamecano’s excellent long pass forward and cutting inside.

Marcel Sabitzer scored his first Bundesliga goal for the club by sweeping in Gnabry’s pull back in the seventh minute of stoppage time, putting the result beyond any doubt.

Bayern can now focus on next week’s Champions League quarter-final first-leg match against Villarreal.

For the hosts, although their chances of finishing in the top four have been dashed today, Freiburg will be focused on their DFB-Pokal semi-final against Hamburg later this month, where they will attempt to reach the final for the first time.
