January 06, (THEWILL) – Australian tennis star, Ashleigh Barty, has announced she is pregnant with her first child.
Barty, who was ranked as the world number one in women’s tennis and won three Grand Slam titles, retired from the sport in March 2022, shortly after winning the Australian Open.
The 26-year-old, who married long-time partner, Garry Kissick, last summer, shared the news on social media, saying 2023 would be “the biggest year yet” and adding that she and her husband were “so excited for our new adventure.”
While Barty ruled out a return to professional tennis, she said she would “never not be involved in the sport” and would continue to stay involved in the sport in some capacity.
The Australian Open, which begins on January 16, is expected to see world No. 1, Iga Swiatek, as the strong favourite to win in Barty’s absence.
