Barcelona Extend La Liga Lead With 2-1 Victory Over Real Betis

February 02, (THEWILL) – Barcelona secured a 2-1 victory against Real Betis in La Liga to extend their lead at the top of the Spanish top flight to eight points.

The match was held at the Benito Villamarin stadium, where Barça knew they had the opportunity to pull away from Real Madrid. Yet, it took until late in the second half for the breakthrough to come, with goals from Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski. However, an own goal from Joules Kounde in the closing stages made it a difficult end for the visitors.

Betis started strong with Luiz Henrique narrowly missing an early chance, but it was Pedri, who had the best chance for Barça. Although goalkeeper Rui Silva twice denied Pedri, Raphinha broke the deadlock in the 65th minute with a close-range tap-in from Balde’s work on the left flank.

Lewandowski sealed the win with his second goal, pouncing on Raphinha’s cross that was flicked on by Ronald Araujo. The cushion was enough for Barça to secure the victory despite Kounde’s own goal. In the end, William Carvalho of Betis was sent off for dissent after the game’s conclusion.

Betis will face Celta Vigo this weekend, while Barça will entertain Sevilla at Camp Nou. The win ensures Barça’s widening lead at the top of La Liga before Real Madrid plays on Thursday night.
