January 05, (THEWILL) – On Wednesday night, Nigerian forward, Taiwo Awoniyi, helped Nottingham Forest secure their first away win in the Premier League since 1999, defeating Southampton 1-0 in a crucial relegation match.
THEWILL recalls that Nottingham Forest had recently played a 1-1 draw with Chelsea and they used that momentum to win a crucial relegation match against the bottom team in the league, helping them move out of the relegation zone.
Awoniyi scored the game’s only goal in the first half, capitalising on a loose pass from Southampton’s defense. Despite creating the better chances on the night, Southampton were unable to find the back of the net, with Che Adams missing an early opportunity to give his team the lead.
The loss marks Southampton’s sixth in a row in the Premier League, leaving them three points adrift of safety. Meanwhile, Forest move up to 15th in the table, with Everton dropping into the bottom three.
The next matches for both sides are in the FA Cup where Crystal Palace will host Southampton at Selhurst Park and Spurs are up against Blackpool.
