November 27, (THEWILL) – By defeating Australia 2-0 in the Davis Cup final on Sunday, in Malaga, Felix Auger-Aliassime made tennis history for Canada, as they won their first Davis Cup championship.
The world number six defeated Alex De Minaur with ease, in a straight 6-3, 6-4 win, to deny Australia, the 28-time champion, the championship. Denis Shapovalov earlier gave Canada, losers to Spain in the 2019 finals, the opening point with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Since losing to the Netherlands in qualifying back in March, Canada has come a long way. The disqualification of Russia and Belarus due to Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, allowed Canada to get a wild card entry into the championship.
After finishing behind Spain in Group B in September, Canada went on to defeat Germany (2-1) in the quarterfinals and Italy (2-1) in the semifinals earlier this week.
In the sixth game of the second set of the final, while a trailing De Minaur was attempting to hit back, Auger-Aliassime saved three break points from 0-40. A few minutes later, he gave Canada the victory with a forehand into the corner that his opponent could only return out of the court, after which teammates surrounded him.
