January 14, (THEWILL) – Arsenal Football Club has been fined £40,000 for not controlling their players during a game against Newcastle United on January 3.

The players had mobbed the referee, Andy Madley, in the 95th minute of the game as they believed they should have been given a penalty. The incident occurred after Granit Xhaka’s cross hit Jacob Murphy’s arm, but the referee did not award a penalty.

The Football Association issued the fine for Arsenal’s breach of FA Rule E20.1. The club is also facing a possible additional fine for a similar incident in a FA Cup game against Oxford United.
