January 31, (THEWILL) – Arsenal have made a big move on transfer deadline day by confirming the signing of midfielder Jorginho from Chelsea with the English Premier League clubs agreeing on a £12 million ($14.8m) deal for the player.
Jorginho has now completed his medical and signed a contract with Arsenal, who were in need of cover for their first-choice holding midfielder Thomas Partey. The Italian will bring a wealth of experience to Arsenal, as they aim to win the Premier League title this campaign.
The 31-year-old has won the UEFA Champions League and Europa League with Chelsea, and also triumphed at the 2020 European Championship with Italy. With Mohamed Elneny suffering a significant knee injury, Jorginho will provide the north London club with much-needed support in the midfield.
Chelsea, on the other hand, were unable to hold onto Jorginho as they continue to push for the signing of Benfica midfielder, Enzo Fernandez. Jorginho’s contract at Stamford Bridge was due to expire in the summer, and with the addition of Fernandez, he was likely to drop down the pecking order in west London.
Arsenal devoted a lot of effort to bringing Brighton and Hove Albion’s Moises Caicedo, to the Emirates but the club remained adamant he was not for sale, leading Arsenal to turn their attention to Jorginho.
