April 10, (THEWILL) – Rangers claw back to within six points of league leaders Celtic thanks to a hat-trick from Kemar Roofe and a spectacular curler from Joe Aribo in their 4-0 victory over St. Mirren on Sunday.

The Light Blues came into the game having lost in the Europa League to Braga. The league win gave Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side a much-needed confidence boost ahead of their quarter-final second leg duel at Ibrox.

Unfortunately, both John Lundstram and Filip Helander were injured in the first quarter, costing the team some starting XI personnel before that reverse fixture.

Rangers were quick out of the blocks, scoring the game’s first goal with less than two minutes on the clock. Roofe was unmarked when Ryan Kent’s delivery into the area found him, and he deftly headed past Dean Lyness in the St Mirren goal.

Connor Goldson tried his chance from long range ten minutes later, but his effort soared way over the bar.

The visitors were dealt their first blow of the afternoon when Lundstram was substituted, due to injury, by Steven Davis midway through the first period.

Rangers pushed for a second goal, but Lyness saved Aaron Ramsey’s shot from the edge of the area.

In the first-half added time, Helander was also replaced by Leon King due to injury, but the change did not bother the Light Blues, who added a second just one minute later.

Roofe teed up Ramsey, who crashed his effort off the crossbar when it looked like he was going to score, but the ball ultimately found its way back to James Tavernier, who picked out the striker to head home his second goal of the afternoon.

With Rangers leading at halftime, Giovanni van Bronckhorst substituted James Sands and Scott Wright for Aaron Ramsey and Ryan Kent, with one eye on Thursday night.

Roofe’s first-ever Rangers hat-trick, as well as the match ball, came just five minutes after the restart.

Alex Gogic almost caught Allan McGregor off guard from long range a minute later, but the veteran keeper deflected his shot away from goal.

On the hour, Roofe was substituted to a standing ovation, and Amad Diallo, who joined on loan from Manchester United in January, was given a chance to feature. After a wonderful run and ball across from Borna Barisic down the left-side, Wright blasted over from the centre of the box with 25 minutes to go.

Five minutes later, Barisic posed a threat down the same side with a cross to the back post, which skipper Tavernier headed straight into the hands of Lyness.

After some fantastic effort by Joe Aribo and Fashion Sakala, Diallo was next to have a big chance, but the loanee missed the target. With less than 15 minutes remaining, the visitors scored their fourth goal, and it was a beauty from the Nigerian.

After receiving a feed from Wright, Aribo curled his shot into the top corner.

With four minutes left on the clock, the Buddies came close to scoring a consolation goal, but Alex Greive was denied by McGregor.

Curtis Main headed over the crossbar from the subsequent corner in what turned out to be the game’s final action.
