December 21, (THEWILL) – Huge crowds in Buenos Aires prevented Argentina from finishing their World Cup winning parade on Tuesday, when their bus was blocked by the throng.
Millions of fans, many of whom were eager to see Lionel Messi and the World Cup trophy, reportedly flooded the streets to welcome their World Cup heroes home.
However, after a national holiday was established two days after Qatar defeated France in the championship game, the sheer volume of fans there led to unsafe situations. Some fans were even trying to get onboard as the bus travelled along the predetermined path.
After a protracted break in the action, attempts to continue were ultimately abandoned in favour of a helicopter tour.
Argentina’s presidential spokeswoman, Gabriela Cerruti, wrote on Twitter: “The world champions are flying over the entire route in helicopters because it became impossible to continue on land due to the explosion of popular joy. Let’s continue to celebrate in peace and show them our love and admiration!”
