AIU Provisionally Suspends Eritrean Runner For Testosterone Use

January 15, (THEWILL) – Eritrean long-distance runner, Natsinet Amanuel, has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), for the presence/use of a prohibited substance, testosterone.

The 29-year-old, who is a road runner and long-distance runner, has made a name for herself in the Eritrean athletics community. She won the Eritrean women’s 10,000 meters title at the Asmara Central Stadium in 2020, clocking 35min 27.92s.

Last year on April 1, Amanuel finished second in the National 10,000m Championship in 33:45.6 and went on to clock 31:50.79 in finishing 18th in the 10,000m at the Fanny Blankers-Koen Games in Hengelo. In October last year, she finished fourth in the TCS Amsterdam Marathon in 2 hours 22 min 45 sec.

These performances led many to see her continue her upward trajectory in the sport. However, the charge of using a prohibited substance has been issued following a test result from December 9, 2020. The Athletics Integrity Unit has provisionally suspended Amanuel pending the outcome of the case.

If found culpable, she will face a ban from the sport. This is a huge blow for Amanuel, who has worked hard to establish herself as a top runner in Eritrea, and for the Eritrean athletics community as a whole.
