Ahmed Musa To Exit Kano Pillars For Turkey

July 22, (THEWILL) – The sojourn of the third most capped player of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Ahmed Musa, away from competitive football in Europe is on the verge of ending with his imminent transfer to the Turkish Super Lig in the colours Fatih Karagümrük, a Turkish professional football club based in the Karagümrük neighbourhood of the Fatih district in İstanbul.

The move will see the captain of the Super Eagles exit his current deal with the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) side Kano Pillars, according to the terms of their engagement, and return to Europe for the upcoming season, where he will feature for Karagümrük.

The details of his personal agreement have not been revealed but with final arrangements in place and all the negotiations sorted out, the move will be made official with the announcement of Musa as one of the charges of coach Francesco Farioli to play at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium.

It was swift business for the Turkish side who will benefit from the experience and pace of the winger and forward at no extra expense as he has been a free international agent since leaving his contract at Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr last October by mutual consent.

In acquiring the signature of the 28-year-old, Karagümrük succeeded in the race to convince the Super Eagles’ captain to be part of their squad for the upcoming season against competition for Musa from Super Lig teams like Galatasaray and Besiktas, who were in the running to get the forward as well.

While Besiktas won the title last season on goal difference, they finished tied on points with Galatasaray while Karagümrük wrapped up the season in 8th position. They are beefing up their squad, with deals like the one offered to Musa, to pose a stronger league challenge and position themselves for European football.

In the Istanbul-based club, the former striker of the English Premier League side Leicester City will be joining former Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Vivian, Argentine midfielder Lucas Biglia and Italian forward Fabio Borini for his first ever professional football career in Turkey.

Musa first featured for Dutch side VVV Venlo upon moving abroad from Kano Pillars before a transfer to Russian giants CSKA Moscow. He then enjoyed Premier League football with Leicester in 2016, who paid a club-record transfer fee for this move only to not get the best of him throughout his stay at the East Midlands side.

The best of his richly fulfilling career was in the Russian League where Musa won their Premier League three times, one Russian Cup and two Russian Super Cups. In his previous side, Musa also lifted the Saudi League title with Al Nassr in 2019.

For Nigeria, Musa helped the Super Eagles win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and starred in the past two World Cups, scoring each time. He scored twice for Nigeria at the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cup tournaments to become the country’s top World Cup goalscorer of all time.
