December 09, (THEWILL) – Unidentified gunmen have attacked a mosque in Garin Baare, Mashaegu local government area of Niger state, killing at least 9 worshippers.
The incident took place on Wednesday morning when the people were performing early morning prayers in a local mosque in Baare village
Niger state Commissioner of Police, Bala Kuryas, said the gunmen rode on motorcycles to the village, heading straight for the mosque where they unleashed terror on the worshippers.
He said the gunmen killed 9 and injured 12 other worshippers. Kuryas said the injured have been taken to a government hospital for treatment, adding that security personnel have been deployed to beef up security in the area.
A police investigation is underway to unravel the motive of the attackers and apprehend them, Kuryas added.
However, residents of the area said 16 people were killed and 12 others injured in the attack.
“The attackers invaded the mosque in the early hours of Wednesday when residents were performing the dawn congregational prayers”, a resident said, adding that the injured were taken to the Kontagora General Hospital for treatment.
