Huge EarthQuake Hits Chile, Tsunami Warning Issued

San Francisco Feb 27, (THEWILL) – Chile has been hit by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake which shook central part of the South American country early Saturday, according to reports from the U.S. Geological Survey.

It struck at 3:34 a.m., that is, 7:34a.m. WAT.

The quake's epicenter was near Concepcion, Chile’s second largest city, about 212 miles (341 kilometers) from the capital of Santiago.

A Tsunami warning has also been issued for Chile and Peru. Concepcion has a population of about 200,000.

There have been reports of major damages, deaths and power outages.
