AFRICAN UNION SANCTIONS GUINEA JUNTA.
ABUJA (THEWILL) – The African Union (AU) has imposed stiff sanctions on Guinea’s military leader Captain Moussa Dadis Camara and members of his ruling junta. The junta, which took power in a coup last December after the death of veteran leader Lansana Conte, has been criticized for human rights abuses in the small West African country. The junta was accused of using live rounds to dispel demonstrators clamouring for the country’s return to a democracy.
According to reports monitored, AU commissioner Lamamra Ramtane was quoted as telling a meeting of the Union in Abuja that, "These sanctions are targeted at the civilians and military personnel that are perpetuating these unconstitutional acts in Guinea. It is not intended to target the people of Guinea.”
