JOS, Nov 13, (THEWILL) – The management of the Jos University Teaching Hospital, JUTH, has debunked media reports that infant deaths in the hospital were due to power outages saying instead that most of the deaths occurred due to infections.

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Dr. Ishaya Pam, who was reacting to a report in THEWILL and other news outlets has promised to publish medical records of the deceased infants to prove that their deaths occurred courtesy of infections and not power outages.

He argued that the hospital is equipped with modern facilities including a power generator to effectively check power outages. But on the contrary when THEWILL Jos correspondent visited the hospital during our checks on the deaths a few days ago, the power generator in the hospital was discovered to be often out of use due to poor maintenance.

Dr. Pam said: “JUTH is one of the most equipped hospitals in Nigeria with incubators and dialysis machines.”

He said some of the babies in question may have died as a result of ‘congenital infections’ while some may have been infected while they were being handled to be transported to JUTH adding that most of the babies were delivered elsewhere but brought to JUTH after they developed complications.

He appealed to patients who have lost loved ones not to allow emotions take over their senses of reasoning but to be objective for the sake posterity.
