ABUJA, May 13, (THEWILL) - Senate on Thursday shut out Chief Alphosus Igbeke as it refused to swear him in as replacement for Senator Joy Emordi as senator representing Anambra North following a notice of appeal filed at the Supreme Court by Senator Emordi.

Igbeke of the opposition All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) who was returned by the Appeal Court sitting in Enugu on Wednesday was at the Senate today (Thursday) to take the oath of office but was not allowed into the chambers.

This will be the second time Igbeke will suffer such fate as he was last month shut out of the chamber following a notice of appeal filed by Emordi at the Appeal Court seeking interpretation of the ruling of that court which quashed her election.

Chairman Senate committee on Media and Information, Senator Ayogu Eze defended the action of the Senate in denying Igbeke entry into the chamber saying the Senate acted in accordance with its standing rule which provides that the status quo ante remains until the case is determined in the court.

Senator Joy Emordi of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), whose election was quashed by the Appeal Court had gone to the Supreme Court to challenge the ruling praying the apex court to set aside the verdict of the Appeal Court.
