ASABA, DELTA April 15, (THEWILL) - More than 12, 000 Delta state indigenes have applied for job at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Resident Commissioner, Chief Roland Amadi Uwa has said in Asaba.

Chief Uwa who disclosed this during a courtesy visit on the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, however expressed shock that there are still good number of Nigerians applying for employment at INEC when almost all members of the society had condemned the commission for poor performance.

According to him, 7,000 were already shortlisted after a thorough screening, and that most of them come from homes that calls INEC bad names.

Chief Uwa said INEC and other actors should be held responsible for electoral fraud in the polity.

"In Anambra for instance, for you to contest an election, contestants have to pay N25million. One person even paid for more than five contestants which is about N250million to be able to occupy a single position. Their interest is to get the huge benefit of the office," Chief Uwa said.

He however appealed to Journalists to always cross check their facts before publication to avoid over-heating the polity in the state even as he promised to partner with the media in the discharge of his duties.

Chief Uwa assured all stakeholders that his commission shall conduct a credible election come 2011.

Responding, the NUJ state chairman, Comrade Osita Biose commended the Commissioner and his team for the visit but however advised that his office should be open to Journalists to avoid misrepresentation.
