Yar’Adua Will Respond To Senate Soon- Abba Aji

Abuja Feb 04, (THEWILL) – Nigerian Senators were told on Thursday that President Umaru Yar’Adua would soon respond to calls to transmit a letter to the National Assembly to enable Vice President Goodluck Jonathan assume office as acting President.

Presidential adviser on national assembly matters, Mohammed Abba-Aji told reporters after a meeting with the Senate and Vice President separately that: "The resolutions of the Senate and the various court rulings have been transmitted to the president. He is a man who respects the rule of law."

"He will transmit a letter to the Senate after weighing both the Senate resolutions and the court rulings wisely. He will then do what is in his view the best for the nation."

Pressed further on when the letter from the president would reach the national assembly, he promised that there would be "no time lag."

Nigerian senators again on Wednesday night at a meeting at the official residence of the Senate President, Mr. David Mark reiterated that the ailing president had one more week to transmit the necessary communication to allow the Vice President assume full executive powers or face impeachment proceedings.

The 58-year-old president was evacuated from Abuja to the King Faisal hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on November 23, 2009 and has not been seen in public since.
