San Francisco Feb 03, (THEWILL) – Members of the Executive Council of the Federation were given a taste of what courage, leadership and sincerity was all about when the Minister of Information, Professor Dora Akunyili tendered a memo at the meeting urging the council to ask Nigerian ailing President Musa Yar’Adua to transfer power to the Vice President.
A source at the meeting said when Prof. Akunyili tabled the memo she was verbally attacked and shut down by a good number of those at the meeting, especially the members of the infamous kitchen cabinet.
The source said at the end of the meeting, some Ministers who were stunned by her courage walked up to her to praise her for her stand while some asked her if she took her political career into consideration before making her move.
Professor Akunyili confirmed the incident in a conference call. Sounding a bit miffed, the Minister told THEWILL that she decided to do what was right for the country and that she would table the memo again at the next council meeting next week.
"Yes it happened but I don’t want to get into details right now, but I will present the memo again next week. I am doing it for the interest of the country, it is the right thing to do," she added.
With her resolve, Dora Akunyili who made a mark in her courageous fight against counterfeit and fake drugs in the country when she was boss at NAFDAC, has become the first serving Minister to openly disagree with the Executive Council of the Federation on the issue of transferring power to the Vice President.
In a country where honest and sincere politicians are hard to come by, Professor Dora Akunyili has once again raised the bar.
